DuPont collects bioplastics award

DuPont Industrial Biosciences and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) has recently received a joint award in the 2017 Innovation in Bioplastics Awards because of their production of the furan dicarboxylic methyl ester (FDME).

The technology is a bio-based monomer made from fructose, and is one of the 12 building blocks identified by the US Department of Energy which can be converted for use in different applications such as packaging, textiles and engineering plastics.

The new technology is not yet available at commercial scale, but it is expected to result in higher yields, lower energy usage, lower capital expenditures and better performance.
