Offset CI has become an established technology

In 2013, Comexi Group has reached an agreement with SP Group for the sale of the Comexi OFFSET CI8 machine. The printing press is now installed and Flexible Packaging Technology had the chance to speak to the CEO about the installation.

You were the second customer of the Offset CI press. What made you decide for this new technology at such an early stage

Actually, I think we bought the first official version of CI press as the first one, was strongly improved to the one we bought and those latest improvements will be set for all the future presses Comexi is offering in the market.

The decision was taken at that moment in order to be the first supplier capable to offer those new advantages in the market

If you compare the offset press with flexo and gravure, where do you see the advantages and disadvantages?

The main advantage is obviously the almost null cost of clichés or cylinders. This matter offers a quick and competitive answer to the actual demand of shorter runs in the market. But there are some others like the print quality and the 100% solvent free technology.

What do your customers think about your new press and the new capabilities it provides you with?

They are very interested in the fact of being able to change designs without any cost, but there are some issues the customer must change in their process. Those changes are not very significant, but some customers are not willing to accept this new “way of working”. It will come sooner or later.

How long did it take your operators to fully master the new press with the new technology?

It’s a very new technology and a printing system that we have never worked before within film packaging industry, so there is still a long way to go.

What kind of products are you printing on the press and how many production meters did you print since the installation?

Mainly we are printing now on BOPPs and some PET films. But we are still introducing this on the market, and markets are slow to move. So we are increasing our production further and further and we are positive that soon we will fill the capacity.

What do you think are the obstacles this technology has to overcome?

All companies involve in the production process should work together in order to provide improved solutions to market demands as for instance heating treatments inks for sterilization.

Printing with a fixed color palette is more common in offset. Is that something you are looking into in order to reduce downtimes?

Of course this is an advantage of this new press that impacts directly to the set up of the machine, being able to offer more competitive delivery times on medium and small runs. Because this is what the market has been demanding since some years.

What printing technology will your next press have?

We will continue developing all of our printing technologies: Flexo, Gravure and Offset as all of them have a specific demand for our customers

How do you see digital printing for your applications?

Digital printing it’s focused on a totally different segment of the market from the traditional one. The traditional presses offers a quick delivery time but really for small quantities up to maybe 5.000m2. From that on, the other technologies are much more competitive.
